Manila, Philippines' Sampaloc district. Numerous colleges and universities, including the National University, the first private nonsectarian and coeducational institution in the Philippines, the Far Eastern University, known for its Art Deco campus and a cultural heritage site of the Philippines, and the University of the East, formerly known as the "University of the East," are located within the district, which is known as the "University Belt" or simply "U-Belt." The Quiapo and San Miguel districts are to the south of the district, Santa Mesa district is to the south and east, Santa Cruz district is to the west and north, and Quezon City is to the south.

Sampaloc is well-known in Metro Manila and the nearby provinces for being the "University Belt" as well as for the Dangwa flower market, which is situated on Dimasalang Road and is renowned as the primary selling location for cut flowers from all over the Philippines, mostly Baguio. Additionally, Sampaloc is home to the Windsor Inn, a historic colonial mansion that is well-liked by budget and backpacker tourists.

The City of Manila's barangays 395 to 636, which make up 241 barangays for the district, would have all belonged to Sampaloc. [1] However, the present-day barangays 587 to 636 were split off from Sampaloc after Santa Mesa became a distinct parish in 1911, and they are now a part of Santa Mesa. Currently, Sampaloc is the only district that makes up Manila's 4th congressional district, whereas Santa Mesa is a component of the city's 6th congressional district.

Numerous streets in Sampaloc, especially in the northeastern section bisected by Espaa and Lacson Avenues, bear names that are directly related to José Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines, such as those named after locations (such as Calamba, Dapitan), actual people (such as Blumentritt), or figures from his novels (e.g. Ibarra, Maria Clara)
